Job Description
On-Call Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner- Opportunity to earn additional income; flexible schedule; SANE Training provided at no cost.
Location: Barbour County, AL; Bullock County, AL; Elmore County, AL; and/or Montgomery County, AL
Job Purpose: Respond to sexual assaults for inmates confined by the AL Dept. of Corrections. The nurse will perform medical forensic examinations, provide emotional support, and assess medical patient’s condition.
Major Responsibilities
Delivers trauma informed, holistic care providing psychological and emotional support in a nonjudgmental manner to the victim and the victim’s family.
Provide on-call coverage as scheduled for a minimum of 8 shifts per month.
Perform emergent medical triage of the presenting patient.
Perform a complete medical forensic evaluation to include:
o Head to toe medical assessment for trauma detailing genital and anal examination.
o Forensic specimen collection and supportive documentation.
o Assess mandatory reporting, completing it if required.
o Obtain patient consent for the exam explaining to the patient in lay terms what will occur.
o Explain options to store or share rape kits with law enforcement.
o Maintain chain of custody and adhere to evidence guidelines.
o Ensure patient confidentiality regarding written records and oral presentation.
o Administer prophylactic medications and emergency contraceptives.
o Provide clear discharge information to the patient which will be supported in follow up by the victim advocate or mental health crisis counselor.
o Document bodily, genital, and anal injuries by taking photographs.
o Properly sealing the kit for storage or transferring it to law enforcement obtaining appropriate signatures.
Attending nurse staff meetings and in-service training. Time and mileage pay will be provided.
Maintain contact with the OPFJC Nurse Manager via cell phone and email.
Complete documentation for the case using the tools and resources provided by OPFJC immediately following the patient visit.
Conduct examinations at OPFJC offices and local hospitals where OPFJC has a Memorandum of Understanding.
Be available to appear as a witness in criminal court proceedings.
Collect, label and seal clothing and other items from the victim during the assault. Provide the victim with clean clothing and access to the shower.
Qualifications
AL state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) with 1 year experience.
Completion of an approved Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training program within 1 month of hire.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills w/sound judgement.
Proof of a valid state driver’s license and dependable vehicle for transportation to work.
Must be able to commit to a regular schedule of on-call shifts.
Compensation
Earn up to $200 per month for on-call shift pay, based on patient population needs.
$300 for each sexual assault exam completed.
Stipend for travel also included.
